Something Bad Is Going to Happen To You

I don't find it negative, sinister or pessimistic to state that at some point in your life, something bad will happen to you. You will be sick or injured. Someone in your family will die. You will die. Ultimately, you will be forced to give up everything you have, including yourself.

For some reason we live as though this isn't true. Everyday, we either completely ignore this fact or we give thanks that we're one of the "lucky ones"; one of the chosen people, to whom nothing bad has happened. But the reality is that you've only been lucky up to this point. Your life hasn't yet been ruined by a catastrophic event. Not yet.

You may be asking how this isn't pessimistic. Allow me to explain myself. Firstly, we ignore this fact because we're afraid. We don't want to accept that something bad is going to happen to us and we don't want to imagine it happening. So we distract ourselves by drinking, eating and shopping furiously (among other things). All the while, we're telling ourselves that we're invincible and that there will be no consequences to our actions. We justify our behavior by pretending that no one else is being affected by our selfishness. We tell ourselves that we don't have time to be contributing citizens of the world. Our schedules are filled up with our addictions; our distractions from reality; the reality that something bad will happen to us. So reminding ourselves of our inevitable fate allows us to come back to reality and realize that we need to live up to our potential. By accepting this fact, we humble ourselves.

Now you may be asking: "So if something bad is going to happen to me, regardless of what I do, why should I bother caring about what happens to me? If I could die tomorrow anyway, why don't I just fuck everything and be selfish until I die? Live fast; die young!" Well, the main problem with this is that you're also assuming that "life is short", which is a dangerous assumption. It's really just an excuse you tell yourself to make you feel better about treating yourself like shit. Something bad could happen to you and you could live the rest of your terribly long life in misery. So, I find it more logical to say: "Although something bad is inevitably going to happen to me, why wouldn't I work to minimize the chances of it happening sooner, rather than later? Wouldn't it be great if death at an old age was the worst thing that ever happened to you?"

So in times of gloom, when your life is losing its direction and you don't know where to turn, take a few moments to sit quietly and remind yourself:

I spent hours trying to sum up my thought in one or two lines and this is the best I came up with.

Louis Negin played my favorite character in Guy Maddin's "Keyhole"... A very tortured yet ecstatic, painful and excited ghost.
